Meet Our Physical Therapy Team

I began my career as a physical therapist over 30 years ago, after graduating from the Ohio State University in 1987. I began working primarily in nursing homes. A hospital in Columbus offered me an opportunity, as a manager of extended care rehab services, which I eagerly accepted. I had grown up blessed with the presence of three grandparents. I enjoy being around older people and was thrilled to have a job where I could help them recover from a general surgical or medical condition or other acute misfortune such as a stroke or hip fracture. I quickly noticed that many times people would recover from their temporary setback, although it would generally take 2 to 3 months. Once they were rehabilitated though, they would return home. I found myself wishing that I could have seen these people prior to their need for a short term stay in the nursing home. I began to think that if I had seen them I could have had the opportunity to help them avoid the need for institutionalization.

Melissa is a doctor of physical therapy, integrative physical therapist, experienced registered yoga teacher (ERYT), Yoga Alliance certified education provider (YACEP), and Art of Longevity (AOL) certified instructor with the Dayan Arts Organization Wild Goose Tai Chi & Qigong. Additionally, she is certified in Tai Chi for Balance Levels I and II with The Ohio State University & Lucy Bartimole. She is also a Flex program instructor for Silver Sneakers. Melissa is an active student in the Dayan Arts and has a consistent, personal yoga practice. Melissa is experienced in teaching a variety of styles of yoga, but through her work as a physical therapist she regularly blends eastern and western practices. Dr. Kerr’s therapy training allows particular expertise in attention to modifications, accommodations, and alternative postures for individuals who have underlying health concerns or injury.
